"Viking Glass Epic 6 Petal #1436 - 8.5 Inch Vase Introduced in 1962!"
by Preston Ver Meer

My 1962 Viking Catalog, which is mostly printed in Black and White, shows a number of what is now called Epic 6 Petal items. They were just listed under the title Epic like a lot of Viking's early items. The 6 Petal design was used on stemmed and un-stemmed items. Lots of varieties so don't overlook some of the patterns very scarce and unique pieces. The #1436 - 8.5 inches Vase Footed, the topic of this article, was shown on page 2 of this Catalog. The Catalog says 8.5 Inch but I have never seen one much over 7 Inches.

The "Teaberry" Color (On the Right) was, a 1962 - 1963 limited color, only shown in my 1962 Viking Catalog.

I do not have the 1963 Catalog. The other colors, listed in my 1964 Viking Catalog, were Avocado, Bluenique, Honey (Amber), Persimmon and Ruby. The 1964 Catalog did not show this piece made in Ruby but it was made at a later time period. The Avocado #1436 was shown on the first page of the 1964 Catalog.

Avocado, Bluenique, Honey (Amber) and Persimmon were in the line the longest!

You can walk into almost any Antique Store or Flea Market and find a 6 Petal Vase, sometimes called 6 Petal Compote, in the common colors. They are usually priced not much more than the $4.00 to $5.00 they sold for back in 1962.

The fact that the general public does not know how, when or where these were made is why we Viking Glass collectors get a real thrill when we find a bargain. I will cover some of the hidden treasures, disguised as common items, in this article on the #1436 Vase.

Most of the #1436 measure between 7 and 8 inches!

The #1436 was in and out of production from 1962 until Viking first closed in 1986. The vases were shown in the 1962 Viking Catalog as an 8.5 inch Vase. Many vary in size and most of them do not make the 8.5 inch height. As a matter of fact the tallest one in my entire collection is 8 inches and the shortest is about 7 inches. They were hand made! They all vary a little in width depending on height but they all have the 3 inch Base.

You can already see, in the first 3 items, that these Vases were hand made and pulled separately and the tops vary a lot. They may also vary in width because of the length of the pull upwards.

The Persimmon pieces (On the Left) almost always have the Crystal Clear Crest around the top!

The 1966 - 1967 Catalog showed the Amber #1436 on Page 5. The same colors were offered and they were selling for $3.50 each. They still did not show this Vase made in Ruby. Some of the Persimmon pieces may have a base that turns to a yellow color.

The 1968 - 1969 Catalog again showed only the Amber #1436. The color "Thistle", a dark pink, was shown in this Catalog but the #1436 was not shown made in this color. The Price List was showing the same colors and prices as 1966.

My searching has found that Bluenique is a little tougher to find than the other early colors!

The 1970 Catalog again showed only the Amber #1436. The color "Lime", Yellow Green, Vaseline, was shown in this Catalog but the #1436 was not shown made in this color. The Price List was showing the same colors as 1966 but now the prices were up to $4.50 each. This Vase was still not shown made in Ruby in 1970.

The 1971 Catalog shows the Bluenique #1436 on Page 10 with a large selection of Bluenique items. Many 6 Petal items were shown made in Ruby but not the #1436 Vase. The vase was still selling for $4.50 in all available colors.

The Charcoal Blue color was never listed in the Viking Catalogs. I don't know exactly when this color was made but I have narrowed it down to the mid 70's.

The 1972 Catalog was dominated by the "Diamond Thumb Print" and "Drape" patterns. The #1436 was shown on the same Bluenique page as it was in 1971. The vase was still selling for $4.50 in all available colors.

I have written about the "Charcoal Blue" color throughout this website. I think it replaced "Bluenique" for a while. I also believe the Charcoal Blue items are fairly scarce.

The 1973 Catalog again listed only the 4 original colors. The Catalog Price list showed the colors Plum and Brown now being sold but the #1436 was shown "NOT" made in these colors. All were still selling for $4.50.

The 1974 Catalog showed 2 pages of mixed patterns in Ruby Red. There was no #1436 shown. There was an Avocado #1436 shown on page 5. I do not have a 1972 Price List so we will assume prices were about the same.

Viking combined the 1975 - 1976 Catalogs. The Amber #1436 was shown on Page 9. The Price List shows the Vase now made in Brown. Crystal was added to the Price List but the Vase was not shown made in Crystal. It was still not shown made in Ruby and all colors were selling for $5.00.

The 1976 - 1977 Catalog showed the Brown #1436 on page 6. Brown was the only color added to the line and the available colors in 1977 are Avocado, Bluenique, Amber, Persimmon and Brown. The #1436 is quite ubiquitous in the base colors and now they are all selling for $7.50 each.

The 1977 - 1978 Catalog showed the Bluenique #1436 on page 4. Colors and prices were the same as last year. It amazes me that they still DO NOT show this vase made in Ruby.

The 1978 - 1979 Catalog finally showed the Ruby #1436 on page 8. The other base colors were shown on pages 5 and 6 mixed in with other 6 petal items.

Black comes Back as a Viking Color in 1978.

The Black #1436 was shown on page 14 in a 2 page spread of Black items. After years of collecting I know all the Black items shown in this Catalog are tough to come by and most have to be considered Scarce.

Charcoal Blue may have been made in this time period and is also very hard to come by. I still haven't figured out why the change in Blue. I do know the Charcoal Blue pieces seem to be the hardest to find. The Ruby color was added to the Price List and was selling for $9.50 each. The standard colors were now up to $8.95 each.

Four New Satin Colors Burst into the 1978 - 1979 Viking Catalog!

The 1978 - 1979 Catalog explodes in Satin Colors as you open the 2 Page Spread on Pages 30 and 31.

Viking took 12 items, most of them 6 Petal, and made a series titled "Color Satin". The 1436 was shown on these 2 Page made in Green, Amber, Blue and Orange Satin.

These items were only shown for a short period in 1979 and 1980. The Satin items were selling for $9.95 each.

The Persimmon or Orange Satin Vase was shown with 12 other Persimmon Satin Colors in the 1978 - 1979 Catalog.

The Orange and Bluenique Satin Vases in the #1436 are pretty easy to set apart from the other Satin Colors.

It gets a lot tougher when it comes to the Amber and Green Satin Colors made at this time.

I do not have the 6 Petal Green Satin made during this period. It was more of a Avocado Green Satin. These were all selling for the same price. I show this Green Satin color below.

Amber Satin is a little tougher to separate from Peach and Ginger without a good photo.

I make this reference for people who are buying off Ebay. Some of these colors are hard to photograph. You really shouldn't have to much trouble telling the color in good light.

The 1979 - 1980 Catalog showed all the Satin #1436's but the Black one was dropped. This could be one of the toughest colors to get to complete your collection.

The Ruby #1436 was still in the Catalog and still selling for $9.95.

Viking made a dozen different pieces in All four of these Satin Colors, Green, Blue, Orange and Amber!

This Epic "6 Petal" 8" Covered Candy Jar #6812 is shown on page 11 of the 1979 - 1980 Viking Catalog. I am showing you this piece so you can see the Green Satin Color made at this time. A person could put a pretty impressive collection together with this pattern alone.

This Green Satin 8 inch Covered Candy sold for $14.50 back in 1980. It is not a very pretty color to me so I am betting they are few and far between. Again, I am only showing this color here so you can see the color. There are other articles on this item.

The 1980 - 1981 Catalog introduced the "Viking's Spring Blossoms".

The Catalog Heading reads;
"Viking gives you the freshness of Spring in 3 soft and subtle pastels. Each piece is beautifully handcrafted in pink, blue and green frost and clear. These delightful Spring pastels, designed for every decorating need, will definitely give you a new natural Spring look!"

Spring Blue (to the Left) and Spring Green (Below)were only shown in the 1980 - 1981 Viking Catalogs!

Spring Blue and Spring Green #1436 Vase sold for $9.95 in 1980 and I think they are pretty scarce today.

This Spring Green Vase was only shown in the 1980 - 1981 Viking Catalog!

The 2 page spread on pages 10 and 11 showed a large display of mixed items made in the Spring colors. The #1436 was amongst these items shown in Spring Green, Spring Blue Clear.

The Vase was NOT made in the Pink and Frosted Colors at this time. The other Satin Colors were also shown in this Catalog. The Satin pieces were now selling for #11.50 and the Ruby was going for $10.50.

The 1981 - 1982 Viking Catalog was full of the "Pastel and Satin Look".

Page 5 of this Catalog shows the #1436 Vase in Blue Frost, Green Frost, Pink Frost, Lilac Frost and Yellow Satin. It is not shown but the Crystal Frost was also made at this time.

The Catalog has them labeled as #1436 - 8.5 inch Vase but none of them are that tall. All of them are closer to the 7 inch size. All of the Frosted pieces were selling for $7.75. The Ruby was still in the Catalog and selling for $7.50.

List under the Title Pastel Frost, Green Frost is the way Viking was writing about this color!

You can see by the photos that this Green Frost is a lot lighter than the Green Satin that was shown earlier. Viking jumped all over the place with their colors. Saying "Satin" one time, "Frost" another time and even mixing names like "Yellow Satin" mixed in with all the other Frost items on page 5 of the 1981 - 1982 Viking Catalog.

I do not have the Yellow or Blue Satin in the Gallery yet. BUT! You can see the colors used in other pieces by typing the color in the search box on the home page.

The 1981 - 1982 Viking Catalog only showed a few pieces of the Lilac Frost!

This must have been a very popular color in late 1981 and early 1982 because Viking added a quite a few new pieces in this color in the 1982 Catalog.

This color usually always brings a good price when found at Antique stores or even on Ebay.

The photo on the Left seems just a hair darker than the actual Vase.

These Vases were selling for $7.75 each in the January 1, 1982 Viking Price List.

The Crystal Satin #1436 Vase was shown (not Decorated) on this same page in 1981 - 1982!

You will notice this Crystal Satin Vase is decorated. The Decorations were not added until 1984. I think the production of decorated items was very low.

The decoration is part of the "Flower Tree" design that Viking used on a series of items pictured on pages 26 and 27 of the 1984 Viking Catalog.

This Vase was in the 1984 Price List under the new number D2703 and was selling for $12.50.

Viking brought back the old "Evergreen" color on page 11 of the 1981 - 1982 Catalog!

It was on Page 11 of this Catalog that Viking showed 9 piece of Viking Glass made in the old Evergreen Color.

All the 6 petal Vases and Compotes were shown along with 2 pieces of the "Arlington" pattern.

The #1436 Vase in Evergreen was selling for $7.00 in 1982.

These items were still shown in the 1982 Catalog but were dropped by the 1983 Supplement so I am going to say they were in the line for a very short time.

The color "Ginger" was introduced by Viking in the 1982 Catalog!

This #1436 "Ginger" colored Vase was shown on Page 11 of the 1983 Supplement to the 1982 Viking Catalog.

This color was shown in the 1982 Catalog and on Page 18 they show the Amber and Ginger #1434 Compote side by side so you can see the difference in the color. A Ginger Frosted Bud Vase is shown later and was labeled "GG".

They do not show a photo of the #1436 in Ginger Frost but they have it in the Price List under the color "GG" standing for Ginger Gloss. They must have change the Frosted or Satin name again.

The 1984 Catalog introduced the Peach color and the #1436 was shown on Page 19 in Peach Satin Frost.

The Pink and Peach Frost colors drive me nuts! They are so close to the same color I can only tell them apart when I have them side by side.

When I buy items off Ebay I never know for sure which one I am getting and I know the Peach is harder to come by.

The Pink, Lilac and Crystal Frost were also shown in this Catalog all selling for $9.25 each.

I am dating Raspberry to 1984 even though I cannot definitely prove that the color was made then!

There may be a Viking Brochure or a 1985 Viking Catalog that shows this color but I only have a small reference to it in the 1984 Viking Catalog.

The Catalog does not point out the Raspberry color but has it listed on the color list.

If you search the "Raspberry" color on my website you will see the other items I have in this color. I am dating it accordingly and I also think it is a very RARE color.

The color Sterling Grey was also shown in the 1984 Catalog, another Rare color I don't have in the Gallery.

There are some very gaudy look alike 6 petal Compotes out there but thay are taller and very poor Glass. February 2009
