""Yesteryear" Pineapple Jar & Lid - Pineapple Flowerlite!"
by Preston Ver Meer

The Bump in a Diamond Shape of the Pineapple is only one of many designs that filled the "Yesteryear" Category.

I have no idea if Viking got some Old Pressed Glass molds and added pieces to form this line in the late 40's. Some patterns are a very close look alike to the old "Tepee" Pressed Glass pattern made by George Duncan's & Sons & Company back in 1896 in Washington, Pa. The Fan and Diamond cut look was very popular back then. Viking mixed a number of Designs under the Category called "Yesteryear".

The 10 inch Vases have the Diamond and Fan look with the 7 inch Plates taking on the Old Lattice look. A large variety of Shapes and Patterns.

The 8 Inch Pineapple Jar & Cover #1930 was first shown in the 1957 Viking Catalog under the heading "Yesteryear".

I am sure that meant a number of old Pressed Glass Patterns brought back in Color by Viking. There are about a dozen different designs and shapes shown under this title.

The 6 Inch Pineapple Flowerlite #1931 was also shown in this 1957 Viking Catalog.

It is the exact same base but the Pineapple Lid was replaced with a Crystal Glass 11 hole 3 inch "Flower Block". My 1957 Viking Catalog is a copy so I do not have the Price List.

Amethyst, Tawny (Amberina) and Amber were the only colors shown in 1958!

A.L. Randall Company from Chicago, Ill sold a lot of Viking Glass. Their 1958 Catalog showed pages of Viking items and the 1931 Pineapple Flowerlite was shown on Page 37 of this Catalog. Colors available were Tawny (Amberina), Amber and Amethyst. They sold for $1.50 for Amber and Amethyst and $2.00 for Tawny.

You can see a lot of variation in the colors of the Tawny Pineapple Jars. This is a blend of Yellow and Orange. It is made to look somewhat like the Amberina Colors of Yellow and Red. I do not call it Amberina but use the Viking name "Tawny" The Amethyst is a deep Purple color and should not be confused with the "Teaberry" color that was made only in 1962. I will show this color later in this article.

The Rare Milk Glass Pineapple Jar was introduced in 1960 and I believe it had a very short production life!

The 1960 Viking Catalog showed an entire page of Yesteryear Patterns on page 7. The only colors shown were Tawny and Milk Glass. The Pineapple Jar and Lid were shown in Tawny and the Pineapple Flowerlite was shown in Milk Glass. I believe the Milk Glass Pineapple is very scarce today.

The "Yesteryear" Milk Glass 10 Inch Vase, Decanter and Flowerlite in Milk Glass seem to be very Scarce and bring a good price when sold.

The 1960 Viking Catalog showed many "Yesteryear" patterns in Amber and Amethyst. There were the only 4 colors shown made at this time.

Pineapple made only in Tawny, Amethyst, Milk Glass and Amber at this time!

I don't know what the early relationship was with Viking and Rainbow Glass from Huntington, West Virginia. I know they did work back and forth and maybe even exchange molds according to old Viking employees. I do know Viking Glass bought Rainbow Glass out in 1977. The 1972 Rainbow Catalog has a picture of the Tawny and Amber Pineapple and Lid. They had it listed as #355. They had it listed in their Price List in color Green, Amber and Orange and selling for $7.50.

The 1962 Viking Catalog showed the Pineapple Jar and Lid on page 8. I have no Price List with this Catalog but I am sure it was available in all 4 colors.

The 1962 Catalog shows the "Teaberry" color and shown is the "Teaberry" colored Pineapple. I am sure this was a store item and is very scarce today!

The 1964 Viking Catalog showed the entire Yesteryear line on pages 12 and 13 in colors Tawny and Amber. The Pineapple Jar and Lid was shown in Amber on page 13. The only 2 colors listed in the Price List were Amber and Tawny. They were both selling for $4.50 double the five year earlier price.

The 1966 - 1967 Viking Catalog show the same 2 Pages of "Yesteryear" items but only Tawny color was listed in the Price List selling for $5.00.

The 1968 - 1969 Viking Catalog showed the last Yesteryear Pineapple in Tawny on page 11. No Amber colors were shown or listed. This was the last sighting of the Yesteryear Pineapple in my Viking Catalogs.

The Green Pineapple had to come later and the only information I have was in the 1972 Rainbow Catalog! This Green one has a Viking Sticker on the Lid!

The 1972 Rainbow Catalog has a picture of the Tawny and Amber Pineapple and Lid. They had it listed as #355. They had it listed in their Price List in color Green, Amber and Orange and selling for $7.50.

The Colonial Blue Pineapple Jar was introduced in 1960 and I believe it had a very short production life!

The 1961 Viking Catalog showed the Pineapple Jar and Lid on page 7. The Price List with this Catalog showed this pineapple selling in Amethyst, Amber, Colonial Blue and Tawney.

This is the first Colonial Blue Pineapple I have seen and I have collected and wrote about Viking Glass since the early 1990's. I bought this in Dec. 2013

CONCLUSION:

I really don't know how Scarce some of these Viking items are! The Pineapple Jar and Lid have to rank right up there with the Scarce stuff. I know the Amethyst Jar and Lid sold for over $125 in 2007. I bought the Milk Glass one off Ebay and it was the only one I have seen. Time will tell but these are highly collectible as Jars and Flowerlites!
