"Viking Glass Epic Leaf Vases Introduced In 1976!"
by Preston Ver meer

The 1976 - 1977 Viking Catalogs introduced the Epic Leaf pattern with a large display of over 25 different items. These Large, Middle sized and Small Leaf Vases were included in these pages of Leaf items.

#7605 Tall 26 Inch Floor Vases were made a very short time and are Very Scarce!

Pages 2 and 3, of the 1976 - 1977 Catalogs, were solid with Crystal Leaf items including photos of the #7608 26 Inch Tall floor Vase, the #7605 - 15 Inch Middle size Vase and the #7601 - 13 inch Bud Vase.

You will notice I am showing the Middle Size Blue Vase in the Charcoal Blue colors. These may be very scarce colors along with Bluenique.

The 11/1/1976 Viking Price List does not show the huge #7608 - Tall Floor Vase in the price listings. I am sure the prices were only shown briefly in earlier Price List!

The Huge Vases must have been in the line for a very short time. I was very fortunate to buy the Persimmon and Avocado from one of our members so I could complete this article. The Crystal Satin and Amber still elude me. The Crystal Satin #7608 was shown on Page 3 of the 1976 Viking Catalog and the Persimmon (Orange) was shown on Page 4.

These are the only references to this Huge Floor Vase. They had to sell for over $25 each compared to other prices for large Vases at that time.

The #7605 - 15 inch Middle sized Vase sold for $7.50 and the smaller #7601 - 13 inch bud Vase sold for $6.00 in all colors. Not Ruby Leaf items were ever made.

All three sizes of this Leaf Vase were made in colors, Crystal Satin, Green, Bluenique, Amber, Orange, Brown and Crystal.

The Bluenique and Persimmon Middles sized Vase still elude me. These plain vases were not shown after 1979. Stippled Base Vases, like the Amber one, may be quite Scarce.

Many pieces of this pattern have "Stippled" leaves and other parts. Here is a small description of "Stippling" by David Doty taken from his Carnival Glass website www.ddoty.com.

Stippling: Stippling is an effect that gives the background of a piece a sort of sand look. Northwood Glass Company often made two versions of its patterns, one without stippling and one with. Generally, the stippled versions are more desirable. I am willing to bet this will also be the case with Viking Glass.

The 1977 - 1978 Viking Catalogs showed the #7605 - 15 inch Leaf Vase in Avocado on page 2 and the Persimmon #7601 Leaf Bud Vase on page 3. Both of these sizes were again shown on pages 8 and 9 in Plain Crystal and on pages 10 and 11 in Crystal Satin. NO #7605 was listed. That was all the Vases shown and the April 1, 1977 Viking Price List had the same colors as above listed.

The 1978 - 1979 Viking Catalogs showed the #7605 & #7601 Leaf Vase in Brown and Avocado on page 4.

The 1979 - 1980 Viking Catalogs showed the #7605 & #7601 Leaf Vase in a few of the new Satin Colors.

Page 10 showed the #7605 in Crystal, Green, and Amber Satin colors (Missing) and the #7601 in Crystal, Green,(Missing) Amber and Persimmon Satin colors.

Again, This was the end of the Plain Colored Vases and some of the Plain colors with Stippled Bases may be very Scarce.

No regular colored Vases were shown.

The 1979 - 1980 Price List only listed Green, Amber and Orange Satin Colors and they were selling for $10.95 for the 15" and $9.95 for the 13 inch.

Beautiful Spring Blossom Colors were introduced to the Viking line in 1980!

The 1980 - 1981 Viking Catalogs showed the #7605 & #7601 Leaf Vase in the new Spring Blossom Satin Colors on page 10. The new colors were Green, Pink, Blue, Yellow and Lilac Frost. The #7605 - 15 inch Vase was selling for $12.95 and the #7601 - 13 inch Bud Vase was selling for $11.95. The only other Leaf Vase shown in this Catalog was the Crystal Satin on page 12. Again, there were no plain colored Leaf Vases shown.

The 1981 - 1982 Viking Catalogs showed the #7605 & #7601 Leaf Vase in all the new Spring Blossom Satin Colors on page 2. The Price List now listed all colors selling for #7605 - $12.95 and #7601 - $11.95. The Plain colored Leaf Vase must not have been made after 1979.

The 1982 Viking Catalogs showed the #7605 & #7601 Leaf Vase in a large full page display of just the Crystal Satin Vases and the Leaf Bell on page 5. This is a pretty impressive display of these 3 items. Pages 22 and 23, of this 1982 Catalog, show a full display of the Leaf Vases in the Spring Blossom Satin colors. Viking must have been closing out these Vases in 1982 because they had a large price reduction. The #7605 - 15 inch was now on sale for $9.50 and the # 7601 - 13 inch was selling for $8.00 in all Spring Blossom colors.

Two new colors, Peach and Sterling Grey, were added in 1984 and 1985!

The 1984 Viking Catalog introduced the new Peach color. The #7601 - 13 inch Leaf Vase was shown in Peach Satin Frost on page 4. The Sterling Grey color was also shown in 1984 but the Catalog did not show the Leaf Vase made in this color. But we have it in the Gallery.

The #7605 was not shown made in Peach, Peach Satin or Sterling Grey.

The January 1, 1984 Price List showed only the #7601 - 13 inch vase in colors Peach, Lilac, Pink, and Crystal Satin Frost all selling for $9.50. No #7605 - 15 inch Leaf Vases were shown. The Grey Satin was listed in the January 1, 1985 Price List and sold for $10.50.

CONCLUSION: There is no way you can see the true beauty of these Art Glass Vases in this Article. The photos are good but they just don't do justice to the beauty of these Vases sitting on a low window sill with the Sun blasting through. It is truly neat. I have the values fairly low on these vases for now and you have time to complete your collections. I think the larger ones are going to be tough to get.
